Most agro-processors have been told solar can't start their motors. It can — if the system is designed by someone who has done it. Here is how a 15 kW oil press in Ibadan runs its full shift on solar, and what that means for mills ten times the size.
Key facts
- Motor start-up surge is 3–6× running current; a VFD soft starter cuts it to near running current.
- A 15 kW press running 8 hours needs ~120 kWh a day: 30–35 kWp of solar and 60–100 kWh of battery.
- Diesel alternative for the same press: about ₦2M for a generator and ₦12M+ a year in fuel.
- Mills running 500 kVA+ of generators most of the day are prime Energy-as-a-Service candidates.
The surge problem, solved
A large motor starting direct-on-line draws several times its running current for a second or two. Cheap solar installs trip on that surge, which is where the myth comes from. A variable-frequency drive ramps the motor up gently, a high-surge hybrid inverter covers the remainder, and the battery buffers the rest. The Reblong press in Ibadan starts and runs on exactly that design.
Daytime production is solar's home ground
Processing shifts run when the sun is up. Unlike a cold room, a mill barely needs the battery overnight, so the array carries production directly and the battery handles cloud, start-ups and the end of the shift. That keeps the battery small and the payback at three to four years for a direct purchase.
Scaling to a mill
Flour, feed and rice mills burning 1,000+ litres of diesel a day fit the full Energy-as-a-Service site: 250 kW–1.5 MW of solar, 100–500 kWh of battery, a fixed monthly fee 20–30% below today's spend and no capital outlay. Local-currency mills qualify from about US$1M of equipment — usually one large mill or two sites.

Talk to Frontières BayFrequently asked
Will solar damage my motors?
No. The VFD makes starts gentler than direct-on-line, which extends motor life.
Can my own engineer install it?
Yes for smaller direct purchases — we design, supply and commission; your solar-trained engineer installs to our checklist.
